Band 8-9 Sample Essay

The debate over government spending priorities between technological advancement and fundamental necessities represents a critical policy challenge. While both areas deserve attention, I believe a balanced approach favoring technology investment ultimately serves society’s best interests.

Proponents of substantial technology funding argue that technological innovation drives economic growth and solves societal challenges. Similar to how how technological innovation can address climate change, government investment in emerging technologies can create high-paying jobs, attract foreign investment, and maintain global competitiveness. For instance, South Korea’s strategic investment in semiconductor technology has established it as a global leader in electronics manufacturing.

However, advocates for basic needs spending contend that governments must first ensure their citizens’ fundamental requirements are met. They emphasize that access to adequate healthcare, housing, and education should take precedence over technological pursuits. This perspective gains support from examples in developing nations where technological advances exist alongside widespread poverty.

In my view, while basic needs are essential, technology investment often provides solutions that address these very necessities more effectively. Much like impact of space exploration on technological advancements, technological development can improve healthcare delivery, enhance educational access through digital platforms, and create more efficient infrastructure. Moreover, the economic benefits from technological advancement can generate resources for supporting basic needs programs.

Therefore, governments should prioritize technology investment while maintaining adequate support for essential services. This balanced approach ensures both immediate needs and long-term development goals are addressed effectively.

Band 6-7 Sample Essay

In today’s world, governments must decide how to spend their money effectively. Some people think new technology should get most funding, while others believe basic needs are more important. I will discuss both sides and share my opinion.

Those who support technology investment have good reasons. Technology can help countries become richer and more powerful. For example, many jobs are created when governments support new technology companies. Also, better technology can help solve problems like pollution and disease.

On the other hand, basic needs supporters say many people still don’t have enough food or good healthcare. They think it’s wrong to spend money on expensive technology when some citizens cannot afford basic education or housing. This is especially true in poor countries.

I think governments should try to do both things. While should governments support space exploration, they must also ensure citizens’ basic needs are met. They can use some money for technology and some for basic needs. This way, countries can develop while helping their people.
