Also, it stops bad things from happening to people. For example, when workers have rights, companies cannot make them work too much or pay them too little.
Other people think governments should focus more on things like making money for the country or building roads and hospitals. They say these things help people more directly. Also, some say that if a country is poor, it cannot protect rights properly anyway.
